The Value of A MentorWhat Is The Value of a Mentor and Mentorship Benefits.

WHAT IS THE VALUE OF A MENTOR.

For the longest time I never quiet understood the value of a mentor, or why you would have one. It wasn’t until one day, I made a decision to see how does mentoring help, that everything changed.  Now, before I explain mentorship benefits Id like to share a short story.  It goes like this…

“A little boy asks his mother;  “what is the value of a mentor”.  The mother says, “that’s a big question… hold that thought” and disappears.When she returns she hands the young lad a diamond, perfectly shaped and cut, and says.. “take this stone, and find out how much it’s worth, and come home, When you are done, I’ll answer that question for you”.

The boy heads out and asked several people that he mets throughout the day…  first he mets a man who owns a grocery store and asks:  “excuse me sir, can you tell me how much this is worth?“.   The store owner looks at the stone and says: “I don’t know little man but, Ill give you a banana for it”.

He then goes to a museum, and asks the curator: “excuse me sir, how much would the museum pay for this stone?    The curator says:   “I love your enthusiasm kid, but we don’t need one of these in our collection just now. Thank you though”.

He leaves despondent, then goes to a jeweller and the jeweller says  “this gem you have here, is the most perfect gem I’ve ever seen.  I can’t imagine it’s value.  To me it appears priceless.”

He then returns home and asks his mother:  “how much is it actually worth, and what does it have to do with the value of a mentor?”   She says:  People will value a mentor based on their point of view, their level of information and their belief in having a mentor.  But that doesn’t change the fact that a mentor is priceless.    Remember, surround yourself with people who value you,  just like the jeweller valued that gem, with love, care and affection.   Please remember you are priceless also.

Now, let me explain why:

The value of a mentor is  Priceless

One of the greatest value of a mentor is the ability to see ahead what others can not see and to help you navigate a course to your destination.   John C Maxwell

First of all.. what exactly does PRICELESS mean to you?  For some, it may be too expensive however another viewpoint may be  – that which you cannot put a value or price on.  In addition, Priceless reflects the value you put on your own ability and self worth.

One of my mentors, Dr John Demartini says: “That the quality of the questions we ask ourselves determines the quality of our life”.

Once you change the questions you ask yourself, everything changes.  Instead of how come,  what if gives a completely different outlook?      How much is it worth to you to accomplish the outcome you desire?

The Value of a Mentor

Someone to bounce ideas off is invaluable.

Find a mentor and experience what it is like having someone believe in your idea, your ability and your solution more than you do yourself.   Then you will comprehend the value of a mentor.

Its like having a coach, or copilot along for the ride.  They  encourage you, yet even more importantly, help you to expand your comfort zone.  A Mentor questions what you believe and shifts your perspective.

When you find a mentor, listen to your mentor. Respect them. Do as they ask.  They want the best for you.  They have walked the path, been helped by others and know the way.  Often they carve the path and design the way, but trust your mentor to have your best interests at heart.

THE IMPACT OF MENTORSHIP

Mentorship provides

  • a shared learning experience.
  • a tool to help you examine your beliefs and values,
  • the ability to align your values and beliefs with your business and lifestyle.

The impact of mentorship assists with

  • identifying options to achieve goals;
  • clarify your learning goals and
  • asking more powerful questions.

A mentor raises awareness of practice flaws and inadequacies, providing insight into the development of alternative processes.

A mentor gives you direction, tips, advice, suggestions, motivation and support.  There are times in your life when you don’t believe in yourself enough.  That’s when you need a mentor – someone to believe in you more than you do.

A mentor can be creative, innovative and help with your communication skills. They bust limiting beliefs and reset your mindset…  giving you an entrepreneurial expansion.

As a mentee you receive increased satisfaction with your outcomes, clarity of direction, and can align your values aligned with your outcomes and life.

Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen and a push in the right direction.  John Crosby

The Value of A Mentor is in the Impact of Mentoring

WHAT IS A MENTOR’S ROLE

In Chinese the word Sifu,  means skillful person or a master. They are a  “skilled person” or “teacher”.  The Japanese word is Sensei and it depicts a one to one lifetime relationship.  Its an inner circle, closed door, lifetime transformational relationship.  Thats another impact of mentoring. If affects you in a deep way.

Mentors offer experience, wisdom, guidance and encouragement and demonstrate leadership, so you can become the best version of yourself, whilst your business can have the presence and influence it deserves.

Mentoring is a developmental partnership, where one person shares knowledge, skills, information and perspective to foster the personal and professional growth of someone else.  Its all about guidance and support. The impact of mentoring is evident in the results achieved, the relationships formed, the influence of your business and the quality of your life.

A Mentor’s role is to:

  • Give vision and insight,
  • provide support and encouragement;
  • Act as a role model and volunteer time;
  • be accessible and approachable;
  • explain the unwritten rules, corporate cultures and values.
  •  help frame decisions based on political circumstances,
  • guide you in developing leadership competencies
  • help identify opportunities,
  • build a trusting and meaningful relationship
  • develop greater self esteem, self belief and self confidence.

A Mentor’s greatest achievement is to reframe, debunk and bust beliefs that are holding you back, consequently keeping you stuck and denying the world (and you) of your skills, abilities and insights.

If you aren’t sure what to look for in a Mentor, or what you may receive from a Mentor, here are some other great tips on what mentors can do for you.

SOME MENTORSHIP BENEFITS

The impact of mentoring is two fold, with both receiving mutual respect, shared values, clear expectations,  personal connection, and reciprocity of actions. As a mentee, you can also receive:

  • Increased Motivation
  • Someone to see opportunities where you may see obstacles
  • Improved confidence
  • New perspectives
  • Fast Tracked Learning
  • Constructive Feedback
  • New Knowledge.

Mentorship benefits are unique to each mentor/mentee arrangement due to your business being as individual as you are.

Finally, don’t just take my word for how important or what the value of a mentor is, hear what an interview with Dan Lok, – who can take you form $150K in debt to a millionaire and decide what the catalyst was that moved him to success.    He speaks openly about his rise to success and how he wouldn’t of been able to do it without a Mentor.

Most noteworthy is this article containing great tips taken from the interview. Especially at minute 9.09, 9.46, 12.52. 28.54, 31.00  as well as this really important one about the value of a mentor at 15.19.

Min 15.19 – The Value of A Mentor

You can do all the things successful people do.. vision boards, affirmations and reading all the books of successful people, yet the turning point is when you realise the impact of mentoring on your business, and how much enjoyment you get out of life.  Study successful people, connect with them, give first (take them out for lunch), try to learn from them, work for free but engage a mentor so that you can develop that one on one relationship that makes you great.

Sometimes an opportunity is right in front of you, so be too dumb to be scared, just go do it.  Act, be fearless and see what happens next. What have you got to lose? – A lifetime of accomplishment.

To become a master, you have to push yourself past what you believe to be your best.

The impact of mentoring is that you can dream bigger, value yourself more, therefore you can charge more whilst doing the same amount of work and still be able to enjoy work more.   Practice asking for a higher price in front of a mirror to increase your value and self worth and as a result asking then becomes easier, with no push back.  Listen to your mentor, he will believe in your value more than you do.

Having a mentor helps you think bigger, they teach you to shift your business model, to do things differently, to change your whole idea of how you work, what you do and what you can do.  Build a business around something you want to do, and you enjoy it and grow.

Now, all this advice is great – but what happens if you don’t know where to start, or how to do any of this. That’s where a Mentor comes in.  Once you connect, you’ll then learn the value of a mentor.
